Here's a secret from inside the industry: the most valuable thing an editor can give you isn't corrections. It's the truth. Most authors come to us not knowing whether their book needs a light polish or a structural rebuild — and those two paths differ by months of work and a serious amount of money. The editorial assessment exists so you never have to guess.
What it is
We read your complete manuscript the way an acquisitions editor at a publishing house would: cover to cover, no skimming, with twenty years of collective genre instinct switched on. Then we write you an honest, thorough report. What's genuinely working — because you need to know what not to touch. What isn't working yet, and precisely why. Where your book sits against the expectations of its genre and market. And the part authors tell us they value most: a prioritized roadmap of what to do next, in what order.
What you receive
A written editorial report, typically eight to twelve pages, covering structure, pacing, character (or argument, for nonfiction), voice, dialogue, opening and ending strength, genre positioning, and overall readiness for publication — plus a recommendation of exactly which editing tiers your manuscript needs and which it can safely skip. We also include a reader-experience section: not what an editor thinks, but what a reader feels at each stage of the book, because those are two different kinds of truth and you deserve both.
When to choose it
Choose an assessment when you've finished a draft and don't know what it needs. When you've had conflicting feedback from beta readers and want a professional tiebreaker. When you're deciding whether the book is ready to pitch or publish. Or when your budget is limited and you want to spend it where it will actually matter — an assessment costs a fraction of a full edit and makes every subsequent dollar smarter.
What it isn't
An assessment doesn't correct or rewrite anything; your manuscript comes back exactly as you sent it, accompanied by the report. It's the map, not the journey. And fair warning, given with affection: we will be kind, but we will not flatter you. An assessment that only tells you what you want to hear is a very expensive greeting card.
